Biographical Note

Descendants of Irish immigrants to North America, members of the Sullivan family became prominent in San Antonio, Texas business, professional, and military circles, beginning in the late 1800s.  One of the first of these immigrants, Daniel Sullivan, was born in 1844 in Meenygorman, in County Cork, Ireland, to Timothy and Ellen Sullivan.  With his younger sister Anne, Daniel Sullivan came to the Alexandria, Louisiana in 1850, to live with his uncle, also named Daniel Sullivan (1805-1871).  The children accompanied their uncle when he moved to Indianola, Texas in 1857, to establish a general merchandise and grocery business.  After serving in the Confederate army during the Civil War, young Daniel Sullivan returned to Indianola to work in his uncle's business, taking over its operation upon the latter's death.

In 1868, Daniel Sullivan married his first cousin, Anne Cotter (1842-1904), who also came from Ireland to Louisiana as a child, to the household of her uncle, the elder Daniel Sullivan.  Daniel and Anne Cotter Sullivan and their seven children, moved from Indianola to San Antonio in 1882, where Sullivan established a banking business, under the name O'Connor and Sullivan.  He later became the sole owner, and the name of the business was changed to D. Sullivan and Co., growing into one of the city's prominent banking businesses, and remaining in operation into the 1940s.  Daniel Sullivan remained active in his business until his death on November 30, 1931.

The children of Daniel and Anne Cotter Sullivan were:

1. William Cusack Sullivan (1868-1930), attended St Mary's College in San Antonio, and the University of Pennsylvania's Peirce School of business; worked in the family business, and pursued a number of outside business interests.

2. Eleanor Alice Sullivan (1870-1931), who married James Robert Collins.

3. Annie Marie Sullivan (1872-1956), who was educated at Notre Dame College in Baltimore and the Sacred Heart Convent in Paris; returned to live in San Antonio.

4. Daniel Joseph Sullivan (1874-1948), attended St. Mary's College and Rock Hill College in Maryland; also worked in his father's business.

5. John Cotter Sullivan (1875-1966), attended St. Mary's College, Rock Hill College, and Harvard Law School; practiced law in San Antonio; married Florence Fletcher in 1909.

6. Mary Elizabeth Sullivan (1878-1967), attended Notre Dame College and Sacred Heart Convent; married Gen. John Lincoln Clem (1851-1937).

7. Walter Sullivan (1881-1905), attended St. Mary's College, Harvard, and Yale University.

Scope and Content Note

Correspondence, legal documents, financial documents, printed material, and photographs pertaining to several members of a San Antonio, Texas family are part of the Sullivan-Clem Family Papers.

Most of the papers are related to the personal activities of various family members, in most cases with little detailed documentation of any one individual.  Items related to the family banking business, D. Sullivan and Co., and other business activities, are much less extensive.  The papers are arranged into subgroups according to the family member(s) with which the material is associated, and into series by document type.  The subgroups are:

Daniel and Anne Cotter Sullivan Papers.  Includes letters from Ireland to family members in Louisiana, and later, Texas, primarily from Mary Sullivan Cotter, the mother of Anne Cotter Sullivan.  Legal documents apparently connected with an estate matter, also include information on the history of the Cotter family in Ireland.  The only item pertaining to the business career of Daniel Sullivan is a ledger containing daily entries of his Indianola, Texas business.  A few items are related to Anne Sullivan, the sister of Daniel Sullivan, and with Walter Sullivan, the youngest child of Daniel and Anne Cotter Sullivan.

Annie Marie Sullivan Papers.  Includes a few miscellaneous letters, a diary of a trip to Japan and the Philippines, some school material, and scrapbook material removed from the ledger included in the subgroup above.

Daniel Joseph Sullivan Papers.  Includes a few scattered personal items.

John Cotter Sullivan Papers.  Correspondence covers Sullivan's genealogical research, as well as miscellaneous personal subjects.  Several items date from his attendance at Harvard.

John Lincoln Clem-Mary Elizabeth Sullivan Clem Papers.  Most of the material is associated with Mary Elizabeth Sullivan Clem.  Included are letters from her husband, John Lincoln Clem, and other personal correspondence, records of some property transactions, and various other personal items.

William Cusack Sullivan Papers.  The most extensive subgroup, the papers are related primarily to the varied business interests of William C. Sullivan.  These documents are part of the Business Papers series, which is further subdivided according to the different business activities, including the Santa Rosa Ranch in Brooks County, for which he acted as manager; real estate development and insurance businesses; wholesale liquor businesses in El Paso and San Antonio; business activities in Mexico; and the operation of a Catholic Cemetery in San Antonio.  Several oversize items are associated with the Business Papers series, most of them ledgers, which have been approximately dated by their entries.  The remainder of the material in this subgroup consists of miscellaneous personal correspondence, legal documents, financial documents, and school-related material.

William Cusack Sullivan. Estate Papers.  This subgroup contains additional information about Sullivan's business activities, as it pertains to the administration of his estate.  Sullivan's sister, Annie Marie Sullivan, served as executrix of the estate, with legal assistance from John Cotter Sullivan.  In particular, these papers document the collection and payment of debts, and the disposal of property.

General Family Papers.  This subgroup contains material that could not be identified as being associated with a particular family member, or which involved more than one family member.  Included in this subgroup, as part of the Legal Documents series, are a number of printed court documents related to lawsuits involving different family members.  Most of these suits involve Daniel Sullivan or D. Sullivan and Co., with other family members often a party to the action.  Also found here is Genealogical Material on the Sullivan and Cotter families, most of it generated in connection with the production of a book on the family's history; newspaper clippings on various family members; and miscellaneous printed items.  Photographs provide extensive documentation of family members and some other individuals and objects.  Some photographs have been tentatively identified, while others remain unidentified.

The Sullivan-Clem family papers were removed from the D. Sullivan house on Broadway in San Antonio following the death of Mary Elizabeth Sullivan Clem in 1967.  The home was subsequently demolished.
