Born in Essex, New York on June 22, 1840, Henry Bates Stoddard came to Texas in 1860. He enlisted in the Confederate Army and served throughout the war, was captured and exchanged twice, and attained the rank of Captain by the time of his parole.
Following the war, Stoddard settled in Millican, and in 1867 moved to Bryan, his home for the remainder of his life. He engaged in business pursuits in a number of areas, including livestock raising and processing, land development, mining, and oil. He served as president of the Texas Livestock Association and of the Interstate Cattlemen's Convention, and was involved in efforts to establish beef packing and refrigeration plants in Texas. Stoddard was actively involved with the Aransas Harbor City and Improvement Company, one of the developers of the town of Aransas Pass. He acted as agent and participant in land and mineral development ventures in Texas and Mexico, and later invested in oil-related businesses.
Stoddard continued his military connections after his service in the Civil War, as an officer in the Texas Volunteer Guards. He served from 1879 to 1893, reaching the rank of Brigadier General.
Another significant aspect of Stoddard's life was his involvement in Freemasonry and the Knights Templar. Stoddard held high offices in the state and national Knights Templar organization, including the highest national office, Grand Master, from 1901-1904. This involvement took him to various meetings around the country, including the triennial "Grand Encampments." Stoddard was also a 33rd degree Mason.
Stoddard married Lerrissa R. English in 1869. The couple had a daughter, Charlotte. Mrs. Stoddard died in 1904. Henry Bates Stoddard died in Bryan on May 29, 1925.
Correspondence, legal documents, printed material, and ephemera documenting business, personal, and Masonic activities are included in the Henry Bates Stoddard Papers.
The papers are divided into two series: Business and personal papers, and Knights Templar and Freemasonry. Each group is arranged chronologically by individual item. A significant proportion of the papers in both groups consist of letters received by Stoddard.
The Business and Personal papers represent a number of Stoddard's business ventures. Particularly significant are items related to the cattle industry. Reports, letters, and legal documents record Stoddard's participation in the effort to establish the Texas Dressed Beef and Packing Company. Stoddard received letters from a number of individuals in connection with this issue and other aspects of the cattle business, including Charles Goodnight, H.M. Ehrenwerth, G.A. Levi, and Ike T. Pryor (the original letters from Goodnight apparently were removed from the papers prior to acquisition by the D.R.T. Library, and replaced by photocopies).
Another business involvement represented in the papers is the Aransas Harbor City and Improvement Company, a venture organized by former Texas Lieutenant Governor T.B. Wheeler. Stoddard was a participant in the effort to sell lots and improve coastal facilities in what became the town of Aransas Pass. Correspondents include Wheeler and the manager of the company, B.H. Wilson.
Stoddard was also an officer of the Texas Mineral Company, which was involved in the promotion of the town of Singleton, in Grimes County, and the effort to extract silica and kaolin in the area, and to establish a brick-making facility.
A small number of items document the Trenton Rock Oil Company, and the Texas Railway Oil and Coal Company. Other papers reflect Stoddard's interest in land in Mexico, and in mining property in West Texas and Mexico. Stoddard's service with the Texas Volunteer Guard is reflected by a few items, including an invitation to the 1888 dedication of the new Texas State Capitol, where Stoddard commanded an encampment of militia troops.
Also included are a small number of personal documents, including some related to political activities. Others are related to Stoddard's daughter Charlotte.
The second and largest group within the papers concerns Stoddard's activities in the Knights Templar and Scottish Rite Masonry. His primary involvement was with the Knights Templar, serving as Grand Commander of the Texas Commandery and as Grand Master of the national organization. Correspondence related to the Knights Templar covers administrative matters, points of procedure, and ceremonial events (Stoddard's Masonic ties extended into his business life. Letters which note this connection but are unrelated to Masonic matters are included in the Business and Personal Papers). Ephemera and printed material associated with local, state, and national meetings are included. A number of letters and reports concern Knights Templar relief to the victims of the Galveston hurricane of 1900.
